PURPOSE: To provide a water-resistant adhesive having strong adhesion to quartz, containing as essential ingredient a polymer obtained by grafting a polymerizable unsaturated monocarboxylic acid with an ethylene and/or α-olefin- based polymer.
CONSTITUTION: A polymerizable unsaturated monocarboxylic acid (e.g. acrylic acid) is added in an amount of 0.01W2wt% to an ethylene and/or α-olefin-based polymer (e.g. ethylene/propylene copolymer), followed by graft polymerization of the acid to a degree of grafting of 95% or higher. The resultant polymer is used as essential ingredient of the water-resistant adhesive which has strong adhesion to quartz material such as quartz-based optical fiber or quartz glass. It is especially suitable as adhesive for joint reinforcement of optical fiber for light transmission, for it retains high adhesive power for a long period even in water.
