Abstract:
PURPOSE: To prepare the subject dispersion, which has a low viscosity and a water phase free from salt, and contains a functional polymer having a high molecular weight, in a high concentration, by polymerizing a mixture composed of a water-soluble monomer, a hydrophobic monomer and an amphiphilic monomer in the presence of a polymeric dispersant.
CONSTITUTION: The dispersion of water-soluble polymer having an average molecular weight Mw of at least 106 Dalton is obtained by polymerizing (A) a mixture composed of (a) 99-70 wt.% of a water-soluble monomer, (b) 1-30 wt.% of a hydrophobic monomer [e.g. the compound of formula I (R1 is H, a 1-4C alkyl; R2 is a 1-4C alkyl, 5-12C cycloalkyl, 6-12C aryl or the like) or the like] and (c) 0-20 wt.% of an amphiphilic monomer {e.g. a compound of formula II [A1 is O, NH or NR4 (R4 is a 1-4C alkyl); R5 is H or CH3; R6 is a 1-6C alkylene; R7 and R8 are each a 1-6C alkyl; R9 is a 1-6C alkylene; R10 is an 8-12C alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; X is a halogen, SO4CH3 or the like] or the like} in the presence of (B) a polymeric dispersant.
