To provide a welding method which relates to a method of welding a flat plate and a corrugated plate for manufacturing a metal honeycomb carrier used for a catalyzer for purifying the exhaust gas from an automotive engine and used for the like, and which makes the welded part of the flat plate and the corrugated plate free of the occurrence of separation, cracking, etc., caused by the stress due to a thermal expansion difference in the time of using the welded carrier.
The end face of a metal honeycomb carrier 1, which is formed by overlapping and winding multiple times the flat plate 2 and the corrugated plate 3 which are consisted of thin metal plates, is irradiated spirally and intermittently with an electron beam, so that the contact part of the flat plate and the corrugated plate is welded and joined leaving a non-welded part unwelded. In the spiral irradiation of the electron beam, the pitch of the spiral is preferably within the range of 0.1-1.0 mm. The intermittent pitch of the electron beam to the end face of the metal honeycomb carrier is preferably 0.1-1.0 mm.
