To provide a wheel steering apparatus having a locking device for limiting a steered angle of a wheel in case of troubles, which wheel steering apparatus can return the steered angle of the wheel to a neutral position by a braking force and a driving force applied to the wheel.
The steered angle of the wheel is controlled by means of a linear driving actuator. A locking device locks the operation of the direct acting actuator when the abnormality has been detected in the direct acting actuator. A force direction judging section 110 detects the direction of the force generated in the wheel having the direct acting actuator by the braking or the driving of the wheel, and judges whether or not the direction of the force shows that the wheel should be returned to the neutral position. A locking control section 104 releases the locking device when the detected direction shows that the wheel should be returned to the neutral position. The locking control section 104 operates the locking device again when a neutral position judging section 106 has judged that the wheel has returned to the neutral position.
