A wire electric discharge machine includes a first wire supporting member 1 and second wire supporting member 2 each of which is provided movably relative to a workpiece W for supporting a wire electrode 3 on an axis line L1, a measuring probe 12 for detecting a contact with a workpiece surface, a supporting member 11 for supporting the measuring probe 12 so as to move the measuring probe 12 integrally with the first wire supporting member 1, and a measuring unit 20 for measuring a workpiece size based on a signal from the measuring probe 12, wherein the supporting member 11 supports the measuring probe 12 so that the measuring probe 12 is located on the predetermined axis line L1 while the wire electrode 12 is removed from the vicinity of the workpiece.
