A yarn monitoring device 34 includes: a yarn irregularity sensor 37; and a yarn monitoring controller 81. The yarn irregularity sensor 37 monitors yarn wound by an automatic winder. The yarn monitoring controller 81 determines yarn defects on the basis of information obtained from the yarn irregularity sensor 37 and yarn traverse position information obtained from a yarn detecting sensor 71 mounted on the automatic winder, in order to output a cutter actuation signal for actuating a cutter 39. Further, the yarn monitoring device 34 includes a yarn detection inputting part 83 for inputting a yarn detection signal outputted by the yarn detecting sensor 71.
