Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clearly define the position of a break-to-open portion on an instrument panel face, to improve an instrument panel cover design quality, and to ensure that the break-to-open portion breaks upon air bag deployment. SOLUTION: In an air bag system for passenger seat, a groove 17 is formed on a surface of a cover layer 12 of an instrument panel cover 102. The groove 17 is plastically deformed in a recessed shape by pressing die along a tear line 16. The groove 17 clearly defines the location of a break-to-open portion 30 on the instrument panel, and ensures that the break-to-open portion breaks. A cover layer 12 is formed when a cushion layer 11 is fused while processing the tear line 16 by a laser beam. The groove 17 closes a cavity made between the cover layer 12 and the instrument panel cover 102. Thus, a shrink mark on the cover layer 12 is prevented from forming even when the temperature inside a vehicle becomes high.
