PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a range to which a user pays attention as a focus area.SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus includes: an extraction unit for extracting a subject region included in an image; a first determination unit for determining whether or not the extraction unit extracts a subject region; when the first determination unit determines that a subject region is not extracted, an estimation unit for estimating whether or not the image is a landscape image; when the estimation unit estimates that the image is not a landscape image, a condition modification unit for modifying an extraction condition for use for extracting the subject region; using the modified extraction condition, a re-extraction unit for extracting again a subject region from the image; and a setting unit for setting the extracted subject region using the modified extraction condition to be a major subject region.
