Abstract:
To provide a 5-stroke internal combustion engine excellent in energy recovery efficiency.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine is equipped with two combustion cylinders 3 and 4, and one auxiliary cylinder 5 sandwiched between them. A main piston 10 is inserted in the combustion cylinders 3 and 4, and an auxiliary piston 11 is inserted in the auxiliary cylinder 5. Combustion gas of the main piston 10 flows into the auxiliary cylinder 5 to push down the auxiliary piston 11, thereby recovering the energy of the combustion gas. While the main piston 10 is made of aluminum, the auxiliary piston 11 is made of cast iron. While the volume of the auxiliary piston 11 is decreased, a rotation balance of a crank shaft 13 is ensured. Therefore, the auxiliary piston 11 can decrease the vertical width of a sliding portion 11b to reduce sliding resistance while ensuring necessary mass.
