A liquid crystal aligning agent which contains a polymerizable compound represented by formula (1), wherein a structure containing an aromatic ring is introduced into the central part and a structure that causes photodimerization is additionally introduced, while having a photopolymerizable group introduced at an end. (In formula (1), C represents a divalent carbon ring-containing group which has 10-30 carbon atoms and contains an aromatic ring; each of P and P' represents a structure that causes photodimerization; each of L and L' represents a photopolymerizable group; and each of S1, S1', S2 and S2' represents a single bond, an alkylene group having 1-10 carbon atoms, or the like.)
