PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element capable of highly accurately positioning a hologram element inexpensively, an image display device using the optical element, and a method for manufacturing the optical element.SOLUTION: In the optical element including a prism including a hologram element 104h including a hologram part HOE selectively reflecting or transmitting light having a predetermined wavelength, a recess part CC is formed in the end surface of a first prism and when the hologram element 104h is arranged in the recess part CC, the recess part CC and at least a part of the outer periphery of the hologram element 104h come into contact with each other, to position the hologram part HOE to the first prism.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
