To provide a photographing apparatus designed such that a diaphragm F value is set in advance before photographing and focus is determined in a contrast system, the photographing apparatus being capable of making a precise manual focus adjustment based on objective data without relying on user's intuition in terms of a depth of field that is difficult to check in a live view.
Before a manual focus adjustment operation, all contrast data in a focus drivable range are taken in, and a subject distance at which each of the contrast data has the maximum value in each of the coordinates (x, y) of the entire photographic image plane is specified. Having the subject distance as a reference, a depth of field is determined, and the contrast data are categorized according to whether they belong to the depth of field. Thus, a focus determination table is formed. By determining the subject distance through the manual focus adjustment operation performed by the user, focus distribution data is superposed and displayed on a live view based on the focus determination table.
