Abstract:
A power conversion device includes an inverter section 40 which can convert between direct current power and alternating current power by turning on and off a plurality of bridge-connected semiconductor switching elements to each of which a free wheel diode is connected in reverse parallel; and a rotating electric machine 50, such as an alternating current generator or an alternating current motor, which is connected to the alternating current terminals of the inverter section 50, wherein when the direct current voltage of the inverter section 40 is below a specified value when starting the rotating electric machine 50, an operation of detecting the speed of the rotating electric machine 50 is executed in a condition in which the direct current voltage of the inverter section 40 is boosted to equal to or more than a specified value of the induced voltage of the rotating electric machine 50, or the like, by intermittently turning on and off at least one of the plurality of semiconductor switching elements of the inverter section 40. By so doing, it is possible to accurately detect the speed of the rotating electric machine 50 and stably start the rotating electric machine 50 even when the direct current voltage of the inverter section 40 is lower than the induced voltage of the rotating electric machine 50.
