Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently removing copper in iron scrap without needing a large-scale facility, when producing a high-grade steel by using copper-containing iron scrap as an iron source.SOLUTION: The method for removing copper in the iron scrap includes the steps of: carburization-melting the copper-containing iron scrap by using an arc furnace to produce molten pig iron for steelmaking; then removing copper contained in the molten pig iron by using a sulfur-containing flux; and subsequently removing sulfur contained in the molten pig iron. In this case, it is preferable to use an arc furnace having a melting chamber and a shaft-type preheating chamber which is directly connected to the top part of the melting chamber and preheats the copper-containing iron scrap. as the arc furnace, to use a flux containing NaS as a main component as the sulfur-containing flux, and to remove copper in a mechanically-stirring type smelting apparatus.
