[Object] To provide an organic compound of excellent characteristics that exhibits excellent electron-injecting/transporting performance with hole blocking ability, and has high stability in the thin-film state, as material for an organic electroluminescent device having high efficiency and high durability, and to provide the organic electroluminescent device having high efficiency and high durability using the compound. [Means of Realizing the Object] An organic electroluminescent device includes a pair of electrodes, and one or more organic layers sandwiched between the pair of electrodes, wherein the compound of general formula (1) in which a substituted bipyridyl group and a pyridoindole ring structure are bonded via a phenylene group, is used as a constituent material of at least one organic layer.
