PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material discrimination device and an image forming device capable of deterring degradation in the precision of sheet material discrimination while suppressing shortening of the life of information detection means.SOLUTION: A sheet material discrimination device 100 comprises: a sheet material placement portion 120 on which a sheet material P is placed; information detection means 110 which is placed on the sheet material placing portion so as to face the sheet material placing portion with a gap therebetween, for detecting information on a sheet material placed on the sheet material placing portion by causing light emitting means 111 to emit light and light receiving means to receive the light; and discrimination means 600 for discriminating the sheet material on the basis of the information on the sheet material detected by the information detection means. The sheet material discrimination device further comprises light emission control means 130 for causing the light emitting means to emit light or stop light emission. A light emitting means which has been stopped from light emission is caused to emit light by the light emission control means immediately before the information detection means detects the information on the sheet material.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
