PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool exerting excellent chipping resistance and peeling resistance under a high-speed intermittent heavy cutting condition of high cutting-in and high feeding in which high load acts on a cutting edge.SOLUTION: There is provided a surface-coated cutting tool in which a hard coating layer comprising a lower layer being a Ti compound layer including at least one TiCN layer and an upper layer being an α-AlOlayer is provided on the surface of a tool base substance. In the TiCN layer, when calculating the distribution ratio of the constitutive atom-sharing lattice point form (unit form) of the TiCN crystal grains adjacent to each other, the grain boundary length of the above lattice point form of Σ31 or more occupies 80% or more of that length of the lattice point form of Σ3 or more, and the TiCN crystal grain of the aspect ratio of 3 or more occupies the rear ratio of 80% or more. Further preferably, the grain boundary lengths of those lattice point forms of Σ3 and Σ5 are 20% or less and 30% or less, respectively of the grain boundary length of that lattice point form of Σ3 to Σ29.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
