In order to enable abnormal combustion of an internal combustion engine to be detected by a low-cost simple means, an abnormal combustion detection device utilizes a direct injection injector as the means for detecting abnormal combustion. The direct injection injector for the abnormal combustion detection device is configured in such a manner that a sac chamber is provided at the front end of a nozzle body and that a nozzle hole is formed so as to connect the sac chamber and the combustion chamber. A needle is contained within the nozzle body, and fuel is adapted to be directly injected into the combustion chamber when the sac chamber is opened and closed by the needle. The abnormal combustion detection device detects the lift of the needle from the closed position by, for example, a sensor, and when the lift of the needle is detected when the direct injection injector is not being operated , the abnormal combustion detection device determines that abnormal combustion has occurred within the combustion chamber.
