ACESULFAME-K INULIN SWEETENER

Title

Nutrition Background

The use of sugar substitute is recommended particularly for diabetics and dieters who are on a controlled calorie intake. Sugar substitute that are available for diabetics and dieters are saccharin, aspartame and more recently Acesulfame-K. These sugar substitutes have an intense sweet taste and do not add any calories.

There are several single ingredient sugar substitutes that are commercially available. The most popular ones are Equal and Nutrasweet, which contain aspartame only. These are available in sachets, tablets and powder form.

i

At present, there is no commercially available sweetener/ sugar substitute which contains single ingredient Acesulfame-K in sachet, tablet or powder form. This utility model formulation will be the first one in the market that will introduce Acesulfame-K 1 sachet mixed with a plant fiber ingredient.

Dietary fiber is also being recommended for a variety benefits like its prebiotic action which prevents bacteria causing diarrheas; to reduce triglyceride level and improve HDL/LDL ratio for preventing cardiovascular disease; to relieve constipation, to mention a few.

Dietary fiber is obtained from the diet as vegetables and fruits, or in commercially available form such as fructo- oligosaccharide which is added to milk formulas as single ingredient cornstarch fiber which is available as Fibrosine, to name a few.

This utility model formulation contains the plant fiber, inulin; which is extracted from the roots of the chicory plant.

At present, there is no commercially available inulin plant fiber in powder form packaged in sachets or tablet.

This formulation will be the first inulin plant fiber to be commercially available in sachet form in combination with a sugar substitute, Acesulfame-K.

This formulation is a new and useful Utility Model food supplement as it will be the first synergistic formulation to combine the health benefits of Acesulfame-K, a sugar substitute, and Inulin, a plant fiber. It is useful for diabetics, dieters and those requiring a high fever, low calorie diet.

The health benefits of this new formulation are the following:

1. As a sugar substitute, it can be used by diabetics with without affecting their blood sugar or insulin level;

2. Since it is low in calories (less than 10 calories per serving), it can be used by dieters or calorie-conscious individuals to maintain their desired weight;

3. The fiber-rich content of this new formulation, coming from inulin, will provide the following health benefits:

3.1 As a prebiotic, this new formulation stimulates the growth of bifidobacteria which prevents harmful bacteria-causing diarrheas;

3.2 Reduces serum triglyceride and improves HDL/LDL ration which prevents cardiovascular disease;

3.3 Improves calcium absorption and prevents osteoporosis;

3.4 Increase stool bulk and relieves constipation;

Currently available sugar substitute are in single ingredient presentation as aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet) and not Acesulfame-K. This new formulation which is in sachet presentation contains Acesulfame-K.

Simple ingredient dietary fiber such as Fibrosine contains cornstarch powder and not inulin. This new formulation will be the first one to contain inulin in combination with Acesulfame-K as sugar substitute in a sachet packaging.

Finally, this utilty model formulation is the first one that has a synergistic combination of Acesulfame-K sweetener and inulin dietary fiber and therefore, a new and useful food supplement.
