Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a cathode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries in which cycle properties and high temperature storage performance are improved without inhibiting charge/discharge capacities or output properties. [Solution] In an inert atmosphere, an aqueous feedstock solution containing Ni, Co, and Mg is supplied to an aqueous reaction solution that is controlled to a temperature of 45°C to 55°C, a pH value based on a liquid temperature of 25°C of 10.8 to 11.8, and an ammonium ion concentration of 8 g/L to 12 g/L to obtain a nickel cobalt-containing composite hydroxide by a batch crystallization method. A slurry containing this composite hydroxide is mixed with a coating solution containing Al to form a mixed aqueous solution so that secondary particles of this composite hydroxide are coated with a coating comprising Al or an Al compound and an Al-coated composite hydroxide represented by the general formula: Ni1-x-y-zCoxAlyMgz(OH)2 (provided that 0.05≤x≤0.20, 0.01≤y≤0.06, 0.01≤z≤0.03) is obtained. With this Al-coated composite hydroxide as a precursor, a cathode active material is synthesized having a structure in which constituent elements containing Al are uniformly dispersed in the secondary particles.
