Abstract:

Anxiolytic agents containing as the active ingredient biphenyl derivatives represented by general formula (I), wherein R¿1? and R¿2? represent each hydroxy, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkenyloxy, aryl, aralkyl, aryloxy, arylalkoxy, lower alkylthio, lower alkoxycarbonyl, nitro or cyano; R¿3? and R¿4? represent each hydrogen, a hydroxy-protective group, lower alkyl or lower alkenyl; R¿5? represents lower alkyl optionally substituted by hydroxy or alkoxy or lower alkenyl optionally substituted by hydroxy or alkoxy; and n and m are each a number of from 0 to 2, provided that 3',5-di-2-propenyl-1,1'-biphenyl-2,4'-diol and 5-(2-propenyl)-3'-propyl-1,1'-biphenyl-2,4'-diol are excluded therefrom. These anxiolytic agents exert no side effects observed in benzodiazepine compounds, such as muscle relaxation, sedation, hypnosis, dependency or forgetfulness and are superior in the anxiolytic effect to honokiol, magnolol and reduced derivatives of honokiol occurring in nature.
