Abstract:
Sufficiently large optical values are detected without the need of using a laser having a high emission intensity or a large light collector, and the determination of the concentration of a target component within a desired section is rendered possible. The orientation of a laser (3) is horizontally or vertically changed to thereby switch the laser-irradiated site of a ground or water surface (5) between a first irradiated site (5a) and a second irradiated site (5b).  A first scattered light resulting from the scattering of a first laser light at the first irradiated site (5a), a second scattered light resulting form the scattering of a second laser light at the first irradiated site (5a), a third scattered light resulting from the scattering of the first laser light at the second irradiated site (5b), and a fourth scattered light resulting from the scattering of the second laser light at the second irradiated site (5b) are detected with a photodetector (9).  Based on the values detected by the photodetector (9) for the first, second, third, and fourth scattered lights, the concentration of the target component in the section ranging from the first irradiated site (5a) to the second irradiated site (5b) is calculated with a concentration calculator (11).
