Abstract:
The present invention reveals an apparatus for mechanically finger vortexing microcentrifuge tubes (14). The apparatus is made of a box; a tube-holding rack (20) having a frame (22), where the top (12) of a microcentrifuge tube is held in a pivotal position; a base plate (24) having a plurality of upright ribs (18), where the ribs cause a pull-and-release action either directly or indirectly on a microcentrifuge tube (14); a wheel (32), where the wheel is connected to an armature (28) and where the armature is connected to the base plate (24); and a motor (34) with a shaft, where the shaft is connected to the wheel (32). In the operation of the apparatus, the motor (34) and the shaft impart a circular motion to the wheel (32) and the armature (28) transposes the circular motion of the motor-wheel to a reciprocating motion on the base plate (24). The reciprocating motion of the base plate causes the ribs to mix the contents of the microcentrifuge tubes.
