CLAIMS :
1. Apparatus comprising a negatively charged body electrode and a positively charged floating electrode, a source of current of suitable voltage connected to a variable electrical control system which in turn is connected to an internal operating battery to provide direct 5 current to the electrodes and a suitable mains powered battery charger as a separate unit for connection to the system via a DC plug and panel mounted socket for recharging the internal battery, control system and, when necessary, a'standby'battery connectable to an additional panel mounted socket.
2. The apparatus according to claim 1 characterised in that the batteries and charger 10 are included in an electrical circuit's having variable resistors, condensers and the like to vary the voltage, the pulse rate of the voltage and other parameters to vary the period between stimuli.
3. The apparatus according to claim 1 or 2 characterised in that the direct current is 12 volts and the charging current is of the order of 200 milliamps.
4. 15 4. Apparatus substantially as described with reference to the accompanying wiring diagram.
Description:
APPARATTUS FOR THE TREA TMENT OFMUSCULAR AND SKELETAL INJURIES TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to apparatus for the treatment of muscular and skeletal disorders, such as injuries, diseases and other discomforts found in humans and animals, as well as the maintenance of healthy muscles.

OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to provide apparatus which is not only effective in the treatment of the above disorders but which is reliable and easy to use.

DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION According to the invention apparatus is provided which comprises a negatively charged body electrode and a positively charged floating electrode, a source of current of suitable voltage connected to a variable electrical control system which in turn is connected to an internal operating battery to provide direct current to the electrodes. A suitable mains powered battery charger is provided as a separate unit for connection to the system via a DC plug and panel mounted socket for recharging the internal battery, control system and, when necessary, a'stand-by'battery connectable to an additional panel mounted socket.

This'stand-by'battery is provided for situations where the internal battery becomes depleted or malfunctions, when remote from a mains power supply for the charger, such as when treating animals in a stable. On plugging in the'stand-by'battery, the depleted internal battery is automatically disconnected from the control and charging circuitry.

The batteries and charger are included in an electrical circuit's having variable resistors, condensers and the like to vary the voltage, the pulse rate of the voltage and other parameters to vary the period between stimuli. A pulse rate of from 0.5 to 1.5 seconds is the normal rate but this may be varied for special circumstances and treatments.

The direct current is preferably 12 volts which can be varied by a suitable rheostat.

A charging current of 200 milliamps has been found to be convenient and efficient.

One of the main advantages of the invention is that the electrodes are not directly or indirectly connected to mains current, which may otherwise cause damage to the internal circuitry, and/or electrodes which have to be wetted with a salt solution for conductivity, or, most importantly, possibly present a risk to the patient under treatment.

The invention may be used for a great variety of purposes, using Faradic principles for the treatment of tendons, muscles, joints, sprains, dislocations, sinusitis, osteo-arthritis, nerve injuries, haematoma, fibrositis among many others. The use of the apparatus causes an increase of blood to be brought to the affected zone with resulting beneficial physiological consequences.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRA WING An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying electronic wiring diagram.
