An application control method and a terminal device, the method comprising: receiving a first input from a user (101), the first input being an input for icons of N applications, N being a positive whole number; in response to the first input, displaying a first control (102); receiving a second input from the user (103), the second input being an input for said first control; and in response to the second input, updating an unread message state of at least one application among the N applications to be a read state (104). The method is used in controlling applications in a terminal device.
