An axial gap electric motor comprises a base (10), a shaft (14), a stator frame (12), a plurality of electromagnet units (19), bearings (11A, 11B), a rotor frame (13) spaced at a predetermined distance from the stator frame (2), a plurality of permanent magnet units (18) opposed to the electromagnet units (19) through a predetermined axial gap, a rotary encoder (17), and a drive unit (22) for feeding an exciting current to the electromagnet units (19) so that the magnetic poles of the electromagnet units (19) my repel the magnetic poles of the permanent magnet units (18) electromagnetically. The magnetic field center line passing through the magnetic pole center of the electromagnet units (19) and the magnetic field center line passing through the magnetic pole center of the permanent magnet units (18) intersect at a predetermined angle.
