Abstract:
An object of the invention is to improve an efficiency of use of light from a backlight (2) and an aperture ratio satisfactorily without any problems such as color division. R, G, B bar- shaped spotlights (2R,2G,2B) are individually generated to irradiate the panel with the spotlights as backlight while moving them in a direction perpendicular to a longitudinal extending direction of row electrodes over a display area. In the display area, first to third spotlights of R, G, B and a fourth spotlight of at least one color chosen from R, G, B while the spotlights are repeatedly moved over the display area, and in accordance with moving of the spotlights, repetition is made of an addressing operation of selecting a row electrode associated with pixels corresponding to a specific irradiation location within an irradiation range of the spotlight or a specific boundary- adjacent location outside an irradiation range of the spotlight in the display area for each of the spotlights. In response to the addressing operation, the pixels associated with the selected row electrode are driven with the corresponding color. In an imaginary area (500) defined for forming sequence of spotlights to be presented in the display area, the number of spotlights is presented larger than the number of spotlights to be presented in the display area and the R, G, B are assigned to the spotlights. The spotlights are repeatedly moved over the imaginary area, and the imaginary area has a defined effective range (510) of spotlights to be presented in the display area. Spotlights within the effective range are used as the first to fourth spotlights .
