Description:
A BALLISTIC TRAP Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to plates used in ballistic protection tests. Background of the Invention

Particle leakage from the end regions of protection plates used for ballistic protection to the surrounding can be observed due to the bullet fragmentation and scattering and in some cases rebounding of particles after the ammunition with kinetic energy hits the protection plates used for ballistic protection. In some cases, even if the progress of the ammunition is stopped and a significant part of the kinetic energy it contains is absorbed, the leakage of these particles, formed as a result of the impact, to the surrounding and the state of still containing injurious energy causes the ballistic tests to be negative.

The United States patent document no US2010147142, an application in the state of the art, discloses a system for containment of shrapnel and projectile. In the said system, a textile material sprayed with polyurethane or another elastomer is applied to the inner or outer surface of the panel. Then, the said material is connected to the inner wall.

Russian patent document no RU2488765, another application known in the state of the art, discloses a device which provides protection against rebounding bullets or bullet fragments. In the said device, bullets and shrapnel are contained in the volume they are in. There is an energy absorbing material on the wall of the said device.

International patent document no W02004109214, another application known in the state of the art, discloses a hand-held shield which provides protection against rebounding bullets or bullet fragments. In the said shield, bullets and shrapnel are contained in the volume they are in. There is an energy absorbing material on the wall of the said device.

Summary of the Invention and Its Objectives

The objective of the present invention is to provide a ballistic trap which is applied to the edge regions where the protection plates used for ballistic protection end, and enables the ammunition particles rebounding and scattering around after hitting the protection plate to be contained.

Detailed Description of the Invention

A ballistic trap developed to fulfill the objective of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying figures, in which:

Figure 1 is the schematic view of the ballistic trap.

Figure 2 is the top schematic view of the ballistic trap.

Figure 3 is the exploded view of the ballistic trap. The components shown in the figures are each given reference numbers as follows:

1. Ballistic trap

2. Main body

3. Shield 4. Filling piece

The ballistic trap (1) of the present invention essentially comprises the following elements:

• At least one main body (2) for providing first contact with the ammunition which is in the shape of almost a rectangular prism and comprises a cavity on one of its surfaces,

• At least one filling piece (4) which is in the form of a plate comprising a cavity in the middle and which is made of adhesive and soft material so that it can be adhered to the surface of the main body (2) comprising a cavity from inside,

• At least one plate-shaped shield (3) for being fixed inside the main body (2) by adhering to the filling piece (4).

The ballistic trap (1) of the present invention is positioned according to the place where ballistic protection is desired and the trajectory of the ammunition.

The filling piece (4) made of soft material is located inside the main body (2), between its edge comprising a cavity and the shield (3). Therefore, sealing and adhesion is provided between the main body (2) and the shield.

The ammunition moving towards the ballistic trap with a certain kinetic energy first comes into contact with the main body (2). The ammunition which pierces the main body (2) loses some of its kinetic energy and continues its movement towards the shield (3). When the ammunition reaches the shield (3), it loses most of its kinetic energy with the impact. It breaks down into smaller fragments after the impact. These small fragments bounce off the shield (3) and continue their movements inside the main body (2) until they lose their kinetic energy. During this movement which small ammunition fragments make until their kinetic energy is completely exhausted, they are confined in the main body (2) because the filling piece (4) provides complete sealing between the main body and the shield (3) and they cannot exit to the outside.

In the preferred embodiment of the invention, black putty, which is also used to attach the windshield to the vehicle body, is used as the filling piece (4).

In the ballistic trap (1) of the present invention that can be produced from any material such as metal, composite, polymer, etc., there is provided a soft filling piece (4) which has adhesive property. Particles formed as a result of the fragmentation of the stopped ammunition are prevented from moving on undesirable routes.
