In a banknote discriminating and counting device (10), information relating to the result of counting the number of coins is inputted by input sections (32, 53) and the information inputted by the input section (32, 53) and relating to the result of counting the number of the coins is sent to a controlling section (50). Then, information relating to the result of counting the number of banknotes by a discriminating and counting section (24) and the information relating to the result of counting the number of the coins which is inputted by the input sections are outputted by output sections (32p, 34, 52, 38). Also, in a currency counting method, banknotes inserted into the inside of a housing (12) of the banknote discriminating and counting device (10) from the outside are discriminated and counted in the number by the discriminating and counting section (24), information relating to the result of counting the number of coins is inputted by the input sections (32, 53), and information relating to the result of counting the number of the banknotes by the discriminating and counting section (24) and the information relating to the result of counting the number of the coins which is inputted by the input sections (32, 53) are outputted by the output sections (32p, 34, 52, 38).
