Abstract:
A battery system comprises: a battery pack comprising multiple battery cells; a pressure sensor positioned in the battery pack so as to measure internal pressure of the battery pack for each sampling period; and a battery management system, which: calculates reference pressure as an average of the internal pressure measured for each sampling period for a sampling time; calculates the amount of pressure change as the difference between the reference pressure and the internal pressure measured for each sampling period; and determines that a thermal event has occurred in the battery pack, if the internal pressure measured for each sampling period consecutively increases at least two times when the amount of pressure change is equal to or greater than predetermined critical pressure.
