Abstract:

[PROBLEMS] A bearing device where preload can be variably set to an amount adequate for a traveling condition of a motor vehicle. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] In a bearing device for a wheel, where a predetermined preload has been applied to a double-row roller bearing, an outer member (7) is constituted of an outer ring member (9) and an outer ring (10) as a separate body. One (9a) of outer rolling raceways is formed on the inner periphery of the outer ring member (9). The outer ring (10) is press-fitted on the outer ring member (9) and the other outer rolling raceway (10a) is formed on the inner periphery of the outer ring (10). An electrostrictive element (15) is installed at a portion where the outer ring (10) and the outer ring member (9) are butted. The electrostrictive element (15) is extended when a predetermined voltage is applied to it according to an output signal from a steering angle sensor, vehicle speed sensor, etc.
