Provided is a biocompatible member having excellent bone binding properties.　This biocompatible member (1) comprises a base material (3) and a layer (10) including hydroxyapatite crystals formed on at least a portion of the surface (5) of the base material (3). The layer (10) is formed from the assembly of columnar bodies (11) comprising hexagonal crystals of hydroxyapatite. The layer (10) comprises a base part (13) having a thickness falling in a predetermined range, and a plurality of protruding parts (15), each in the form of the columnar body (11) protruding from the base part (13). The thickness of each of the protruding parts (15) is greater than the thickness of the base part (13). The surface of the layer (10) is formed as a raised and recessed structure by the base part (13) and the protruding parts (15).
