A camera system which illuminates an object when it is phtogtraphed and is capable of accommodating photographing at a shutter speed exceeding a synchronous speed or continuous-shot photographing. An electronic camera, when in a single-shot photographing mode, flash-lights a Xe tube (81) when a shutter speed is up to a synchronous speed and lights an LED (83a) when it is higher than a synchronous speed, and continues lighting while a slit formed by shutter leading curtain and trailing curtain is moving in an effective imaging area on an imaging element. When in a single-shot photographing mode and at a trailing curtain synchronous photographing and a leading curtain synchronous photographing, it flash-lights the Xe tube (81). When in a single-shot photographing mode and at a slow photographing, it lights the LED (83a) and continues lighting while charge is stored in an imaging element. When in a continuous-shot photographing mode, it lights the LED (83a) and continues lighting while charge is stored in an imaging element; it stops lighting while stored charge is being transferred.
