Abstract:
Proposed are a ceramic honeycomb structure which can achieve the effective collection and removal of particulates and the effective clarification of a harmful gas, both being discharged from an internal combustion engine or the like, and a method for the manufacture thereof. The above ceramic honeycomb structure is manufactured by using a silicon carbide raw material powder which has one frequency peak in the size distribution of particles and contains particles belonging to a first particle group and having a particle diameter of 1.0 μm to 100 μm in an amount of 60 to 80 mass % and particles belonging to a second particle group and having a particle diameter in the range of 0.1 μm or more and less than 1.0 μm in an amount of 20 to 40 mass % and forming the above silicon carbide raw material powder into a honeycomb pillar form, followed by firing.
