The present invention relates to novel algae having improved zeaxanthin pigment productivity. If a mutant strain of the present invention is used, only zeaxanthin in xanthophyll pigments can be easily produced. Specifically, since a step of separating a zeaxanthin pigment from a lutein pigment in xanthophyll pigments is not required, pigments can be efficiently produced at the industrial level, and thus the present invention can be applied as a raw material for foods, functional health foods and medicines containing same. In particular, zeaxanthin is an antioxidant pigment produced by oxidative stress, and exists in small amounts in nature, and thus has been difficult to utilize relative to the importance thereof. Therefore, a mutant strain of the present invention has a large economic effect with respect to industrially producing zeaxanthin by using microalgae.
