A method for coating the surface of a substrate in which coating layers (3a1, 3a2) are formed on the surface of a substrate (W), wherein the annular distal-end surface of a coating material (2) formed to a cylindrical shape is brought into contact with the substrate (W), and the coating material (2) is moved relative to the surface of the substrate (W) while being caused to rotate, whereby the material constituting the coating material (2) is transferred onto the surface of the substrate (W) and the coating layers (3a1, 3a2) are formed. A coating process can thereby be performed on the substrate surface in an efficient manner. In addition, properties of the surface of the substrate (W) such as friction wear properties can be improved in an effective manner depending on the material constituting the coating material (2).
