The component may comprise a light source to illuminate the composite structure and/or the visual object.

CLAIMS

What is claimed:

1. A component for a vehicle interior comprising: a composite structure comprising:

(a) a base;

(b) a cover layer configured to provide a cover surface at a surface level;

(c) an element configured to present a visual object; wherein the element is configured to present the visual object at the cover surface of the composite structure.

2. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises a projection configured to present the visual object.

3. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises a recess configured to present the visual object.

4. The component of Claim 1 wherein the composite structure is configured to present a composite visual effect; wherein the composite visual effect comprises a visual effect of the cover layer and the visual object.

5. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises a projection configured to present the visual object at the surface level of the cover surface.

6. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises a recess configured to present the visual object at the surface level of the cover surface.

7. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises an aperture configured to present the visual object at the surface level of the cover surface.

8. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises an opaque material.

9. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises a projection configured to present the visual object below the surface level of the cover surface.

10. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises a recess configured to present the visual object; wherein the recess is configured to present the visual object below the surface level of the cover surface.

11. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises a projection configured to present the visual object above the surface level of the cover surface.

12. The component of Claim 1 further comprising a light source configured to provide light to illuminate the composite structure; wherein the visual object is configured to be illuminated by light from the light source; wherein the light source is provided at the base.

13. The component of Claim 1 wherein the base comprises a cover base; wherein the composite structure comprises a cover structure comprising the cover base and the cover layer; wherein the cover structure comprises the element.

14. The component of Claim 13 wherein the cover structure comprises an intermediate layer and/or a decorative layer.

15. The component of Claim 1 wherein the cover surface comprises an exterior surface of the composite structure; wherein the surface level is provided at the exterior surface of the composite structure.

16. The component of Claim 1 wherein the cover layer comprises the element.

17. The component of Claim 1 wherein the base comprises the element.

18. The component of Claim 1 wherein the cover layer comprises an opaque material.

19. The component of Claim 1 wherein the base comprises a light- transmissive material.

20. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project from the cover layer to present the visual object at the cover surface.

21. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to present the visual object at the cover surface; wherein the element is configured to present the visual object at the surface level.

22. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project from the base.

23. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project from the base to present the visual object at the cover layer.

24. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project from the base into the cover layer.

25. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project from the base into the cover layer to present the visual object at the cover layer and/or to present the visual object at the cover surface.

26. The component of Claim 1 wherein the base comprises an aperture.

27. The component of Claim 26 wherein the element is configured to project from the cover layer into the aperture of the base.

28. The component of Claim 1 wherein the base comprises a recess; wherein the element is configured to project into the recess.

29. The component of Claim 1 wherein the base comprises a recess configured to facilitate formation of an opening for deployment of an airbag.

30. The component of Claim 1 wherein the cover layer comprises an aperture.

31. The component of Claim 30 wherein the element is configured to project into the aperture of the cover layer.

32. The component of Claim 30 wherein the element is configured to project from the base into the aperture of the cover layer.

33. The component of Claim 1 wherein the cover layer comprises a recess; wherein the element is configured to project into the recess.

34. The component of Claim 1 wherein the cover layer is at a level above the base and at a level below the base.

35. The component of Claim 1 wherein the cover layer is formed with the base.

36. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project to a level at the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer.

37. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project to a level above the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer.

38. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project to a level below the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer.

39. The component of Claim 1 further comprising an intermediate layer below the cover layer; wherein the intermediate layer is the element and/or is under the element and/or is on the element and/or is over the element.

The component of Claim 39 wherein the intermediate layer is (a) at the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer and/or (b) at a level above the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer and/or (c) at a level below the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer and/or (d) at a level above the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer and at a level below the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer.

41. The component of Claim 39 wherein the intermediate layer comprises at least one of a coating; a film; a color; a light-transmissive layer; an opaque layer; a light- transmissive material; an opaque material.

42. The component of Claim 39 wherein the intermediate layer comprises a decorative layer below the cover layer and/or a decorative layer below the base.

43. The component of Claim 1 further comprising a decorative layer; wherein the decorative layer is configured to present the visual effect at the cover surface and/or to present the visual object at the cover surface.

44. The component of Claim 43 wherein the decorative layer is provided at the base and/or in a recess within the base and/or below the base and/or within the base; wherein the decorative layer comprises a decorative effect and/or a color.

45. The component of Claim 43 wherein the cover layer comprises a light transmissive material and/or wherein the base comprises a light transmissive material; wherein the decorative layer is configured to present a visual effect through the base and/or to present the visual object.

46. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises at least one of shape; a formed shape; a molded form; a void; a molded void.

47. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises a set of elements; wherein the set of elements comprises a first set of elements at a first level and a second set of elements at a second level.

48. The component of Claim 1 wherein the visual object comprises an image and/or a symbol and/or icon and/or logo and/or indicator.

49. The component of Claim 1 wherein the composite structure is configured to present a composite visual effect; wherein the composite visual effect comprises the visual object and a visual effect provided by the composite structure.

50. The component of Claim 49 wherein the visual object comprises a color different than the visual effect of the composite structure.

51. The component of Claim 1 wherein the base comprises a top surface and an underside.

52. The component of Claim 51 wherein the cover layer comprises the cover surface and an underside.

53. The component of Claim 52 wherein the element is provided at the underside of the cover layer.

The component of Claim 71 wherein the feature comprises at least one of a recess to fit a projection in the cover layer; a recess in the top surface to fit with a projection in the underside of the cover layer; a projection to fit a recess in the cover layer; a projection in the top surface to fit with a projection in the underside of the cover layer; an aperture to fit with a projection in the underside of the cover layer.

79. The component of Claim 71 wherein the feature comprises a channel for a fill from the cover layer.

80. The component of Claim 52 wherein the base comprises a feature at the top surface.

82. The component of Claim 52 wherein a decorative layer is provided at the top surface of the base.

87. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises at least one of a projection from a top surface of the base; a projection from a top surface of the base into an aperture through the cover layer; a projection from a top surface of the base into an aperture through the cover layer.

88. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project to a level above the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer.

89. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element is configured to project to a level below the surface level of the cover surface of the cover layer.

90. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises an aperture in the cover layer.

91. The component of Claim 1 wherein the element comprises a decorative layer below an underside of the cover layer and/or a decorative layer on a top surface of the base and/or below an underside of the base.

The component of Claim 1 wherein the cover layer comprises a first material and the base comprises a second material different than the first material; wherein the first material comprises a color different than a color of the second material and/or the first material is softer than the second material.

93. The component of Claim 1 wherein the composite structure is configured to provide a user interface system; wherein the composite structure comprises a cover structure; wherein the base comprises a cover base.

The component of Claim 93 wherein the cover base comprises a light guide; wherein the light guide comprises at least one of (a) a clear amorphous material; (b) a clarified resin; (c) a light-transmissive material; (d) a PC material; (e) an ABS material; (f) a nylon material; (g) an injection molded polypropylene; (h) a generally transparent resin material.

95. The component of Claim 93 wherein the cover layer comprises at least one of (a) a TPE material; (b) a TPV material; (c) a PU material; (d) an injection molded thermoplastic material; (e) a generally opaque material.

96. The component of Claim 93 wherein the cover base comprises at least one of

(a) a TPO material; (b) a TPE material; (c) a PC material; (d) an ABS material; (e) a light- transmissive material; (f) a generally transparent material; (g) an injection molded thermoplastic material; (h) a TPU material; (i) a light guide.

The component of Claim 93 further comprising a light source to illuminate the visual object; wherein the light source comprises at least one of (a) an array; (b) a grid; (c) a panel; (d) a display panel; (e) a flexible panel; (f) a lighting array; (g) a lighting device array; (h) a light-emitting device array; (i) an LED; (j) an LED array; (k) an OLED array; (1) a flexible LED array; (m) a flexible sheet; (n) a light source directed through a light guide; (o) an LED mat; (p) a flexible LED mat; (q) at least one light source.

98. The component of Claim 97 wherein the light source is configured to display at least one of (a) data; (b) information; (c) vehicle system information; (d) an input panel; (e) a menu system; (f) a button; (g) an image; (h) an animation effect.

99. The component of Claim 1 comprising at least one of (a) a trim component;

(b) a trim panel; (c) a steering wheel assembly; (d) a console; (e) an instrument panel; (f) a door panel; (g) a dashboard; (h) a cockpit; (i) a knee bolster; (j) an armrest.

100. A component for a vehicle interior configured to facilitate deployment of an airbag into the vehicle interior comprising: a cover structure comprising:

(a) a cover base comprising a front side and a rear side;

(b) a cover layer comprising a front side and a rear side; wherein the cover layer is configured to cover at least a portion of the front side of the cover base; wherein the cover structure comprises a composite structure of the cover base and the cover layer; wherein the cover structure is configured to facilitate deployment of the airbag into the vehicle interior.

101. The component of Claim 100 wherein the cover structure comprises a composite structure; wherein the cover base comprises a base; wherein the cover layer is molded on the cover base.

102. The component of Claim 100 wherein the cover base is configured to separate and the cover layer is configured to separate to facilitate deployment of the airbag into the vehicle interior; wherein the cover base comprises a recess formed as an indentation in the rear side of the cover base; wherein the recess is configured to direct deployment of the airbag through the cover structure.

FIELD

[0002] The present invention relates to a component for a vehicle interior.

[0003] The present invention also relates to a component for a vehicle interior configured to present a visual object at a cover surface.

BACKGROUND

[0004] It is known to provide a component for a vehicle interior configured to present a visual object at a cover surface.

[0005] It would be advantageous to provide an improved component for a vehicle interior comprising an element configured to present a visual object at a cover surface.

[0006] It would be advantageous to provide an improved component for a vehicle interior configured to present a composite visual effect comprising a visual object at a cover surface. [0007] It would be advantageous to provide an improved component for a vehicle interior comprising a composite structure comprising a feature of a cover structure configured to present a composite visual effect comprising a visual object at a cover surface.
