Abstract:
A composition for forming a catalyst layer according to the present invention contains catalyst particles, a binder and a solvent; the catalyst particles have an average primary particle diameter of 1 to 500 nm; the solvent has a surface tension within the range of 23 to 33 mN/m; and the solid content concentration of this composition is 1 to 20% by mass. A gas diffusion electrode according to the present invention is provided with a conductive porous base material and a catalyst layer that is formed on the surface of the conductive porous base material; the conductive porous base material has a critical surface tension of less than 29 mN/m; the catalyst layer contains catalyst particles that have an average primary particle diameter of 1 to 500 nm, and a binder; the catalyst layer has a thickness of 10 µm or less; and the proportion of the uncoated part area of the catalyst layer as calculated by means of image analysis is 15% or less.
