Abstract:
A control device for an engine is provided with, in a cylinder fuel injection engine, a first phase change means which makes the phase of a first intake valve more retarded than the phase of a second intake valve, and a control unit which is provided with a throttle valve for adjusting the intake air quantity of the engine and performs intake valve phase control for making the phase of the first intake valve more retarded than the phase of the second intake valve by the first phase change means such that the air quantity in a cylinder of the engine is reduced to a target value to achieve rich combustion, and when the air quantity in the cylinder cannot be reduced to the target value or less by performing the intake valve phase control by the first phase change means, performs throttle control of the throttle valve following the intake valve phase control such that the air quantity in the cylinder is reduced to the target value or less by the throttle valve.
