This invention relates to a pipe joint and to a coupling method for a pipe material by use of the pipe joint. The pipe joint has a main body portion having substantially the same diameter as that of the pipe material and increased diameter portions at the end portions of the main body portion with a ring-like swell protion between them. Coupling is made by inserting the pipe material into the pipe joint, pressing the increased diameter portion of the pipe joint on the pipe material insertion side in a circumferential direction and causing plastic deformation of the increased diameter portion and the pipe material at the pressed portion. The pipe joint and the pipe material are firmly fixed to one another by the recess formed at this pressed portion and pull-out prevention force is increased by the effect of a tapered portion disposed at the tip of the pipe joint. Complete seal can be made by a sealing material which undergoes deformation due to the pressing and is on the inner side of the ring-like swell portion. Furthermore, since a suitable gap is left between the non-pressed increased diameter portion and the inserted pipe material, the occurence of gap corrosion can be prevented completely.
