Abstract:

A cutting tool comprising a substrate and a coating that coats the substrate, wherein: the coating comprises an α-alumina layer provided on the substrate; the α-alumina layer comprises α-alumina crystal grains; the α-alumina layer comprises a lower part and an upper part; when a color map is created on the basis of the crystal orientations of α-alumina crystal grains identified by using a field emission scanning microscope to perform electron backscatter diffraction analysis on a cross section obtained by cutting the α-alumina layer in a plane including the second interface normal, in the color map, the area ratio occupied by α-alumina crystal grains of which the normal of the (006) plane is within ±15° with respect to the direction of the aforementioned second interface normal is at least 50% in the upper part, and the area ratio occupied by α-alumina crystal grains of which the normal of each of the (012) plane, the (104) plane, the (110) plane, the (113) plane, the (116) plane, the (300) plane, the (214) plane and the (006) plane is within ±15° with respect to the direction of the aforementioned second interface normal is at least 5% and less than 50% in the lower part; and the thickness of the α-alumina layer is 3-20μm.
