A cylinder injection engine capable of improving a fuel efficiency, and a method of controlling the engine, wherein a fuel injection nozzle (19) injects flat-shaped fuel spray into a cylinder, and an air flow control valve (6) generates air flow motion between the piston top surface and cylinder wall surface and the flat spray.
