Provided are a data compression method and a terminal. The method comprises: calculating, by means of a first calculation strategy, a first eigenvalue of a data block to be compressed (S101); determining whether a first reference value exists in a first look-up repository (S102); if the first reference value exists in the first look-up repository, using a similar compression technique and taking a data block corresponding to the first reference value as a reference data block to perform compression on the data block to be compressed (S103); if the first reference value does not exist in the first look-up repository, calculating, by means of a second calculation strategy, a second eigenvalue of the data block to be compressed (S104); determining whether a second reference value exists in a second look-up repository, the second reference value being an eigenvalue identical to the second eigenvalue (S105); and if the second reference value exists in the second look-up repository, using a similar compression technique and taking a data block corresponding to the second reference value as a reference data block to perform compression on the data block to be compressed (S106). The method can increase a compression rate.
