Abstract:
An objective of the present invention is to maintain compression rates without sacrificing processing speed when carrying out either lossless compression or lossless expansion of data. An inputted N-bit (where N is an integer greater than 1) first data string is stored on a bit-unit basis in a first buffer having N-bit regions. When the first data string is stored in the first buffer, a second data string which is inputted prior to the first data string is stored in second buffers which are connected in one or more stages after the first buffer and which have N-bit regions which are associated with each region of the first buffer. An exclusive OR is computed for corresponding bits of the first data string which is stored in the first buffer and the second data string which is stored in the second buffer. The value of the computed N exclusive OR operations is outputted as a first preprocessed data string of N bits, and lossless compression is carried out on the outputted first preprocessed data string.
