A data transfer device which, when data is compressed using a plurality of compression algorithms and transferred, transfers compressed data by applying CPU constraint processing, in which the compression processing speed represents more of a constraint than the transfer processing speed, as a priority over NW bandwidth constraint processing, in which the transfer processing speed represents more of a constraint than the compression processing speed. Specifically, a selection is made for a compression algorithm applied to the CPU restriction processing or NW bandwidth constraint processing according to the NW bandwidth, and the compression ratio and the compression processing speed for maximizing the effective throughput. The compressed data is stored in a temporary hold unit before being transferred. If the amount of compressed data held by the temporary hold unit is smaller than a predetermined amount, the compressed data from the NW bandwidth constraint processing is stored in the temporary hold unit. If the amount of compressed data held by the temporary hold unit is greater than the predetermined amount, the compressed data from the CPU constraint processing is stored in the temporary hold unit. It thereby becomes possible to effectively utilize the NW bandwidth without any wastage, and transfer the compressed data, while improving the effective throughput.
