Abstract:

A device for detecting variation between banks of an internal combustion engine has valve opening characteristic-setting means (57) for varying valve opening characteristics of air intake valves (9) with respect to each cylinder (&num 1-&num 4) or each bank (BL, BR), index-detecting means for detecting an index of a combusting condition, with respect to each bank, at a first valve opening characteristic set by the valve opening characteristic-setting means and at a second valve opening characteristic that is smaller than the first characteristic, fuel injection amount variation-detecting means (27) for detecting fuel injection amount variation with respect to each bank by using an index (Xfn) detected by the index-detecting means at the first valve opening characteristic, and valve opening characteristic variation-detecting means (27) for detecting valve opening characteristic variation with respect to each bank by using an index (Xsn) detected by the index-detecting means at the second valve opening characteristic and using the fuel injection amount variation detected by the fuel injection amount variation-detecting means. It can also be arranged such that, in order to eliminate valve opening characteristic variation with respect to each cylinder or each bank, a valve opening characteristic of the air intake valve is changed by the valve opening characteristic-setting means.
