The invention relates to a device for monitoring surfaces or spaces in order to detect objects located on a monitored surface or in a monitored space or objects entering the monitored surface or the monitored space. A scanning means (1) of the device comprises a transmitting means (7) for transmitting measurement signals and a receiving means (13) for receiving signals reflected from the detected object. The monitored surface or the monitored space can be displayed in a two-dimensional image in a display means (27, 47) of a data-processing system. With the aid of the data-processing system, a partial surface (45, 45a-45e) of the monitored surface or a partial space of the monitored space can be selected, to which partial surface or partial space a predefined action and/or a predefined monitoring function can be assigned. In an alternative device, a first and a second scanning means (1) are provided which are positioned at a distance from one another and the monitored surfaces or monitored spaces of which at least partially overlap. The invention also relates to a method for monitoring surfaces or spaces, in which method the received reflected signals are transmitted into display points or display surfaces and displayed in a display means (27, 47) in a two-dimensional image corresponding to the characteristics of the detected object.
