Description:
DEVICE FOR SEALING A LID ONTO A DRUM

The invention relates to a device for sealing a lid onto a drum, in particular a metal drum, provided with a split ring with channel-like cross-section, which ring simultaneously encloses an edge of the lid and a rim of the drum, and wherein the two ends of the ring can be pulled toward each other by a tensioning member.

Such devices of the type described in the preamble are used to protect the contents of the drum against theft, fraud and the like, wherein it is usual to seal the ring by means of a seal. This seal usually consists of a metal wire, which is guided through appropriate openings in the ring and drum respectively and the ends of which are sea¬ led by means of a so-called lead seal.

Such a method of sealing is still open to the possibi- lity of fraud because the seal is easily removed.

The invention has for its object to embody the sealing more effectively and in a fraud-proof manner.

The device according to the invention is distinguished in that each end part of the ring is embodied with an eye-shaped element, wherein a locking means in the form of a pin is placed through the eyes lying opposite and mutually in line, and wherein at least one end part of the pin is provided with a cold deformation to be arran¬ ged for sealing the pin in the eyes. Due to the use of the cold deformation of the pin th¬ rough the eyes this pin is difficult to remove and can only be released by a sawing operation. This prevents rapid opening of the seal and therefore provides a fraud- proof sealing device. In an embodiment the other end part is provided with a fixedly arranged stop. A cold deformation is hereby only necessary on the one end part for locking the pin in the eyes.

By embodying the pin with a thread and by turning a tightening nut co-acting therewith onto the thread the pin is also suitable as tensioning member.

It is recommended herein to provide the other end part with a holding means, for example in the form of respec¬ tively a hexagonal head or a bent portion, so that the tightening nut can be tightened without the pin rotating therewith.

The cold deformation proposed by the invention can then be arranged on the part outside the tightening nut or on the tightening nut itself.

It is recommended to simultaneously arrange an iden- tification mark, for example that of the manufacturer, on the cold deformation.

Above mentioned and other features will be further elucidated in the figure description hereinbelow of two embodiments. In the drawing: fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a drum sealed by means of a sealing device according to the invention, fig. 2 shows a view along the arrow II in fig. 1 of the end parts of the sealing ring with eyes and locking pin arranged thereon, fig. 3 is a view along the arrow III-III in fig. 2, fig. 4 shows a view corresponding with fig. 2 of an alternative embodiment.

Designated with the numeral 1 in fig. 1 is the drum for sealing, onto which a lid 2 must be arranged. A possible closure of the lid 2 on the upper rim of the drum 1 is shown in cross-section in fig. 3. The upper rim of the drum is embodied with an outwardly rolled rim 3, on which rests the curled peripheral edge 4 of the lid

2. The sealing device according to the invention consists of a split ring 5 of channel-like cross-section, see fig.

3, which completely encloses the curled edge 4 and the rolled rim 3 of the lid and the drum respectively. By pulling the ends 6 and 7 of the ring towards each other the above mentioned edges are locked onto each other. According to the invention each end part of the ring 5 is provided with a plate 8 from which an eye-shaped ele¬ ment 9 is formed. The plates 8 are located in a tangen¬ tial plane, see fig. 2, such that the eyes 9 come to lie opposite each other. The plates 8 can be fixed to the ring 5 in any random manner, for example as in fig 2 by

means of spot welds 10. The eye is also welded closed with weld 10\' .

Placed according to the invention through the eyes 9 lying mutually in line is a pin 11 which in the embodi- ment according to fig. 2 is embodied as a screw bolt. For this purpose the pin is provided at the one end with a hexagonal head 12 and the shaft of the pin is provided with a screw thread 13. A tightening nut 14 can be scre¬ wed onto the screw thread 13 such that by tightening the nut 14 the plates 8, and thereby the ends 6, 7 of the ring, are pulled toward each other.

For sealing the pin a cold deformation 15 is arranged adjacent to the tightening nut 14, for example by means of a pressing tool (not shown) , which can generate suf- ficient force to flatten the metal of the pin 11 on both sides, so that a thickened portion is created, see the line 16, whereby the nut 14 can no longer be unscrewed.

A logo or identification mark of the manufacturer can be imprinted on the flat part, indicated with the surface 17.

It will be apparent that in order to release the pin 11 from the eyes 9, the pin must be sawn through, either between the plates 8 or between the nut 14 and the cold deformation 15. Fig. 4 shows an alternative embodiment wherein the pin 11 is bent at the other end part into a hook shape, see numeral 20. Here also a tightening nut 14 can be turned on the thread 13 of the pin 11 to pull the plates 8 to¬ ward each other. The cold deformation takes place here by pinching together a shank portion 22 of the nut 14, this so that the thread between the nut 14 and that, 13, of the pin 11 are deformed such that unscrewing of the nut 14 is no longer possible. An identification mark of a manufacturer can also be arranged here on the flat sur- face 17 of the shank 22.

Releasing the pin 11 from the eyes 9 of the plates 8 can only take place by sawing through the shaft between the plates 8.

The invention is not limited to the above described embodiments.
