Abstract:
A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is described for converting high resolution digital data to analog signal. The DAC employs a main-DAC for higher order bits, asub-DAC for lower order bits and voltage addition circuit to combine two outputs of the main-DAC and the sub-DAC together. The main-DAC comprises an impedance Z string in serial and the sub-DAC employs Z–2Z ladder structure with its drive reference voltage proportionally scaled down directly from the main-DAC. The main-DAC has intrinsic properties of good linearity and monotonicity, but needs more components and switches, while the structure of the sub-DAC is relatively simple, only needs a few components and switches, but has properties of bigger non-linearity. When they cascaded in serial, the non-linearity of the sub-DAC will scaled down accordingly, thus, the whole DAC will give a trade-off performance for high resolution data conversion.
