Disclosed is a dispersion stabilizer for the suspension polymerization of a vinyl compound, which comprises a polyoxyalkylene-modified vinyl alcohol polymer (A) that contains a polyoxyalkylene group represented by general formula (I) in a side chain thereof and has a viscosity average polymerization degree of 600 to 5000, a saponification degree of 60 mol% or more, and an amount of modified polyoxyalkylene groups of 0.1 to 10 mol%. When the dispersion stabilizer for suspension polymerization is used, suspension polymerization can be carried out with good stability even when the dispersion stabilizer is used in a small amount, blocking or the adhesion of scales that is caused by the instability of the polymerization can be reduced, and vinyl polymer particles containing little course particles, having a sharp particle distribution and a high bulk specific gravity can be produced. (In the formula, R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group: R2 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms; and each of m and n represents the number of repeated oxyalkylene units, wherein m and n meet a requirement represented by the formulae: 1 ≤ m ≤ 10 and 3 ≤ n ≤ 20.)
